Martin Luther King Jr.

Today we celebrated Martin Luther King Jr's birthday by watching a video of his amazing "I Have a Dream Speech".

Christopher and Emily both copied a small portion of the speech which is so important for all of us to remember. "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character".

They also colored pictures of Martin Luther to give them something to do while listening to his speech.

Connecting With History

Last year we started a history program called Connecting With History. It is a catholic program and studies the history of Salvation. We started in Genesis with the creation of the world and have moved our way through the Old Testament to Unit 8 on the Exile of Israel in 722-538 BC. The theme of the unit is listening to God's voice. How the Israelites during there time of exile had to listen to the prophets to know that God had not abandoned them. That he has a plan and a purpose for their lives. We also will continue to learn about Greece but moving into the Classical time period.




This book has many fun activities to help learn about the life of people living in Greece during this time. The way they dress, what they eat, arts, education, etc. The kids will be picking some fun activities to do that I am really looking forward to. This unit should be a lot of fun!

I will also be reading aloud to them God King, A Story of the Days of King Hezekiah. King Hezekiah was one of the few Kings during this time period that obeyed Gods commandments and did not allow pagan worship.

So far we have started the assigned bible reading and have learned about the Assyrian empire who has conquered the northern Israelite kingdom and sent the people into exile.

DEUS EST SANCTUS

Deus Est Sanctus - God is Holy

Christopher has be learning Latin for the last couple of years.
This book should take one year to complete but he only did half of it last year. It comes with a DVD with all the lessons taught by a Latin teacher. He watched for a while but says that the instructor is "scary". She really isn't but I think he would rather have me teach him instead. So I have decided to teach him myself and learn it with him. I have learned some of it from last year but now I am really going to learn it with him. We are doing flash cards together where he tests me with half the vocabulary and I test him with the other half. We also did some translations, one of them being Deus est sanctus. It is a challenge to learn a new language at 40 but is kind of fun.










For christmas Amber got a box of Gears. They are a lot of fun to play with. They are a little hard for Amber but the other kids really liked them.

















Me and Amber spent a lot of time together today doing puzzles. Bob and Larry, Tinkerbell, Spongebob and a number train puzzle. She loves puzzles and is really good at them.

Catholic Bible Study

Today was our first Catholic Bible Study for 2010. It was nice to see everyone again. It feels like it has been a long time since the last one. One really nice thing about it is that everyone has fun. The mom's get to sit around and chat and the kids get play time together. And we actually did our bible study discussion on Mary. We also gathered all the kids and Jen shared an idea she had to collect money and use it to buy food for the homeless. Once we gather all the food we will be taking it to St. Margaret's to be used for the McWarm program. I have to work on setting up a time were we can all go together and take the food in and hopefully get a tour so the kids can see how the program works. I think it is a wonderful idea to make the children aware that there are people that are homeless and that we should help those who are less fortunate than us.
